When we visited the Baba Farid Group of institutions, Bathinda, we had the opportunity to interact with students of class XI and XII. We asked them about their aspirations and dreams for their career and put up a slide underlining the Engineer and Doctor options :). Our children today are almost bull dozed into becoming an Engineer or a Doctor with no regard for their aptitude.

I had written about the business of education basis what we saw in TamilNadu but its a trend all over India. Parents think that becoming an Engineer or a Doctor is the ticket to success, but the reality is starkly different. Less than 10% of the Engineers that we churn out are employable and only some doctors make it big.

For the Baba Farid students we just created a list of other career choices and here’s the slide –

And remember this is a partial list … there are so many options out there for students to pursue.

Parents and teachers, request you to let the child explore things and figure out what they would like to specialise in or get a degree in. The crazy focus on marks and the crazier focus on Engineering and Medical as the only two career choices is denting the potential of our children.
